MRCTI/Two Degrees Adapt Study

Public-Private Partnership to Advance Nature Based Solutions for Flood Resilience along the Mississippi River Corridor

MRCTI and Two Degrees Adapt announce a joint partnership to bring infrastructure investments along Mississippi River Corridor

Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative (MRCTI), Two Degrees Adapt, and Cargill have partnered to conduct an innovative research project on nature-based solutions to river flooding, drought and extreme heat and continue to seek additional corporate collaborators. This project will bring together businesses, adaptation experts, engineering firms, financiers, and local governments to lay the foundation for investments in green infrastructure along the Mississippi River Corridor. Freshwater flooding results in an average $5.4 billion in losses in the US each year. Traditional flood mitigation approaches like levees have been insufficient at managing high river levels in recent years, as evidenced by floods in the Quad Cities’ region in 2019. In addition to flood and drought resilience benefits, nature based solutions also offer carbon sequestration benefits. This study addresses a need for a scientific analysis of green infrastructure economic benefits in the Mississippi River Corridor and catalyzing funding for future projects.
